User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Great Book – A little Optimistic
This is a great book to read before selecting flooring materials as it provides a lot of valuable information on the installation, maintenance and repair of the floors. It also shows how different materials fit together.

There are step by step directions, but no time allowances for band-aids or such. They try to make it look like Joe Homeowner at work but there’s not a beer can or half eaten hot dog in sight. However, there are a lot of shortcuts and very good advice on the things that usually take years to learn. There is also advice for those who need to heed the “Do Not Try This At Home”. Sage advice not to undertake a major floorinig project just before a holiday with a family gathering.

Looking at some of the time allowances I think they are optimistic, even when adjusted for beginners.

Highly recommended.

4 Stars horrible condition
the book itself was very good and informative but the condition that all these home depot books came in were USED/WORN and i purchased them NEW from your site. you shouldn’t pawn off used books as new ones to loyal customers. you people really disappointed me because your merchandise is usually as advertised. really sad.

Landlord Floors

A Valuable Resource for Landlords and Property Managers! This book should be on the bookshelf of every property manager and maintenance supervisor. It contains everything you need to know about carpet and vinyl flooring replacements and repair.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars This books says it all
Thanks a zillion times for finally coming up with something I can use. It’s simple, easly to follow, and concise. This guy knows his stuff. I recommend this book to any landlord who needs to save time and money and significant amounts of it. BRAVO Mr. Fletcher.

5 Stars Pays for itself many times over!
If all you got from this book was a single useful fact to help you decide on one carpet/flooring installation, then you’ve paid for the book – perhaps many times over.

But if you only got one useful fact – then you’re still on page one.

I manage apartments for a living. Replacing carpets & flooring is an expensive part of apartment turnover. No matter how many times I’ve done it, I still feel like flooring salespeople are like used-car dealers. They’ll tell me whatever I want to hear for the product at whatever price I’m able to pay.

I wish I had a flooring expert by my side. Now, I do (in a way). This book is written in a very comfortable, casual style. It’s almost as if the author is standing there tutoring you on all the aspects of flooring. He has a real understanding of the cost/benefit of different flooring materials and he understands the sensitivities of apartment management.

It’s chock-full of tidbits of useful information, tips & tricks. I don’t remember it all yet – but next time I have to buy flooring material, I’m going to re-read the important sections and go to my dealer a lot more prepared to understand what it is I’m buying – and to save money doing it!

It’s not only useful – it’s an easy read. Clearly the author knows his stuff and is able to present it without making me feel like I’m a dummy.

Highly Recommended.

5 Stars I know the author
I know the author very well, his know how is of the highest quality,he knows his stuff!!Im sure that all who read this book will be blessed.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars A comprehensive guide
This is an excellent book, by far the best I have ever bought on flooring maintenance and installation (I wish I had bought this one first). This book offers great comparisons of different types of materials, well written and simple instructions on how to install them and advice on when to get a professional if your an amatuer such as myself. This book is a great resource and will help you make an informed decision if your putting in a new floor, whether you do it yourself or not.

5 Stars An Excellent Resource
We’re refinishing our hardwood flooring and adding laminate to the playroom downstairs, but I wanted to do some research before spending any money. I checked out several books on flooring from the library, and this was the only one that was so thorough I immediately went out and purchased my own copy. Not only does it cover hardwoods and laminates, it covers just about every flooring material you can imagine (leather, rubber, cork, bamboo, etc.). Every material gets a solid description, several pictures, a list of pros and cons, and installation instructions. Also, a big chart in the front tells you which floors can be installed yourself and which need professional installers. It also gives number ratings for the difficulty of the task (should you take it on yourself) and for how much you can expect to spend in comparison with other flooring materials.

This book is simply the definitive resource on the subject.

4 Stars Good overview
This book provides a very good overview of the different types of flooring. It also provides some useful tricks. I recently installed 17′x17′ hardwood bamboo floor for a friend whose house is on a slab. We had to install a vapor barrier and if you read this book you’ll notice that the author and the references are generally from the UK. So if you walk into a flooring distributor and ask for some of the products Jeffries mentioned, you will get some weird looks. But the trick about using tape to hold the boards while the glue dried was invaluable.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Everything you ever wanted to know.
This book will help you from the begining stages of your design to the wonderful professional looking finished product.

1 Star Waste of money!
Should have known better than to trust anything with Black and Decker’s name on it. I bought this book for information on installing hardwood flooring. The only mention of hardwood flooring in the book is to leave it to a qualified professional. Not vey helpful for the do it yourself types. If you have a wood flooring project do not waste your money on this useless book.

3 Stars Not enough information
I felt this book lacked the necessary information a person would be looking for in a book of this type. Although this book had somewhat detailed information on repairing and replacing the subfloor it had little instruction on installing hardwood and laminate flooring. Don’t waste your money on it.

Slate Flooring

Slate flooring is a excellent option for both residential and business, giving designers a unique and flexible material to employ in their home. Slate has many advantages, including its affordability and durability. Slate flooring has a very fine molecular structure, giving it a resistance to moisture. Spills should be very simple to clean up, as slate will not absorb the water. Slate is also exceptionally resistant to stains and dirt. Simple care should keep a slate floor clean with a minimum of effort.

Because of the wide spectrum of origins for slate in the natural world, it can be found in a variety of shades and colors. Slate flooring can be purchased in everything from dark charcoal shades, to vibrant reds or greens. Consumers enjoy a very broad selection of patterns to select from when it comes to slate flooring, giving each floor a unique appearance. The cleft texture of slate flooring makes it highly tough, resisting scratches as well as general wear and tear. The slate texture also provides a safe surface that won’t become slippery, making it a wonderful choice for in the kitchen or work areas.

The combination of good stain resistance and anti-slip properties make slate one of the greatest all around kitchen appropriate flooring materials on the market. In addition to its affordability, slate flooring has the advantage of several unique patterns to select from. Glosses can also be added to slate flooring, bringing another dynamic to its appearance. Laying out slate flooring can be done without professional help, but it requires a good deal of time as well as tools. A diamond bladed saw will be required to cut the tiles. Thinset must also be purchased along with the tile, which is used to secure the tile to the underlayment.

With a smooth concrete surface, no underlayment may be needed. With hardwood subfloors, or broken up concrete, an underlayment of concrete will be required to begin the installation the right way. It is important that the right thinset be used with particular tile sets. The thinset bonds the tile to the underlayment, and if done badly the floor can eventually begin shifting. Be sure to have a big bucket and something to clean up mortar that spreads across tile surfaces.

Before laying out slate flooring, check out the packaging of the slate. Tiles commonly end up shattered after arriving at the store. If any are broken, be sure that replacements match the original tile.
